Dance Workshop of Detroit’s  mission is to showcase Culturally Black Modern & Contemporary Dance Styles to the public; to prevent the erasure of the exclusive styles of movement that is present in Black/African diasporic art.

  • Dance Workshop of Detroit is committed to preserving and showcasing culturally Black Modern and Contemporary dance styles. We center the artistic expressions of the African and Black diasporas, ensuring these styles remain vibrant, recognized, and respected. Our choreography, training, and performances reflect deep cultural roots and contemporary innovation.

  • Not necessarily. We offer opportunities for dancers at various stages of their journey. While certain company roles require technical experience in styles like Horton, Dunham, or Graham, we also provide community-based workshops and educational programming for those who are eager to learn and grow with us.

  • Our repertoire focuses on culturally Black Modern and Contemporary styles, including Horton, Graham, Dunham, African, Jazz, and Hip-Hop. These are taught in rotation during our training season and are often fused innovatively in our performances to reflect the breadth of Black diasporic movement.
